  • Describe Gregg Gillis’ work

After researching about Gregg Gillis, I still don’t really understand what he does. He goes by name (Girl Talk) as well, he is a musician, and does mashups and released record label named “Illegal Art”.

  • Should his work be illegal? Should it be legal?

My understanding is that he samples different audio tracks into a mix as his own music. I don’t think it should be illegal.

  • If his work is legal, does that steal from other artist’s livelihoods?

No I don’t think so, as if his work is worse than the tracks that he used, people wouldn’t listen to it and it wouldn’t get traction. However it seems that he produces value using his own work.

  • Describe Molly Soda’s work

Molly Soda is a blogger and an internet phenomenon.

  • Could her be work have been done in any earlier time? Or only in our present technological moment?

As she does contemporary work and work to do with the internet, I don’t think this could be done before the internet was around.

  • How are Gregg Gillis’ and Molly Soda’s oeuvres similar?

They both do work that can be categorized as art. They are both internet phenomenons.

  • How are Gregg Gillis’ and Molly Soda’s oeuvres different?

Gregg Gillis’ art has to do with music and mashups where as Molly Soda’s has to do with videos, and blogs.

  • Is the work that artists like Gillis and Soda do connected to work by past masters like Mozart or Picasso or Warhol? Or is it of a fundamentally different nature and not connected to past art and artists? Explain.

I think art is fundamentally connected, as we all categorize it as “art”. However the medium and the specifications are wildly different due to technological advances and culture changes.
